The business was started in 1977 at 1 Station Square in Flitwick by Mrs Margaret Harris, having worked at James Walkers Jewellers from 1957 as a Saturday girl, then full time until 1964, when she left to have her first daughter Deborah. Margaret’s second daughter Vanessa was born in 1966.
In 1969 she worked for R Chambers Jewellers in Luton initially part time, then was offered a full time position at Ronald Godfrey Jewellers in Bedford in 1970, which was then taken over by J Weir & Son where Margaret was first manager in their St Albans store then to become manager in their Bedford store. She left to open Flitwick Jewellers in 1977.
Margaret built her business with shops in Hitchin, Kempston & Bedford, then in the late 90’s she decided to concentrate on Flitwick Jewellers. During this time she also was very involved in the National Association of Goldsmiths, our trade association. In 1999 Margaret decided she wanted a shop by the seaside and bought Hills the Jewellers in Felixstowe, where she worked until 2004 and was chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths 1998 - 2000.
The two shops are now run by her second daughter Vanessa who is a partner in the business and works mainly at Flitwick Jewellers and her son in law, Paul is based at Hills Jewellers in Felixstowe .
Although Margaret has now retired, she still has an active involvement and this year has been honoured to be invited to become the president of the National Association of Goldsmiths.
